Access to Information by the Broadcasting Media: The Right to Short News Reporting

Media Release 35/07

Access to Information by the Broadcasting Media:
The Right to Short News Reporting

In terms of Legal Notice 198 of 2007, the Prime Minister, on the recommendation of the Broadcasting Authority, has in terms of article 37 (1) of the Broadcasting Act made regulations to provide for the right of broadcasters to short news reporting. This right allows broadcasters to report on events which would not have been accessible to them had this right not been given to them by these regulations. If an event organiser or an exclusive rights holder does not permit broadcasters the right to cover an activity in their news bulletin, such broadcasters can have recourse to the remedy given to them by Legal Notice 198 of 2007.

This Legal Notice thus provides for access to information by the media to enable them to report on activities which are of high interest to the public.

A copy of the Legal Notice is attached.
